Colours!

Making a new house or re-doing an existing one for that matter, comes with its own set of challenges, learning and mental blocks that you need to get over sometimes.
In the process of choosing colours for the house (the process is not complete yet!), I realized that I have a colour commitment phobia.

So for instance I love the colour on this wall and the resulting look of this room. Isn't it BEAUTIFUL?

BUT will I go ahead and paint a wall at my place in that colour??? Umm, errr, ahem.... no.
Why not, you ask?
I am too scared to commit to it. How will it tie in with the look and style of the rest of the house? What if it doesn't look good after it is done?
Paint over it. Simple!
Not that easy. What about the cost, budget overshoot and extra time to change it? What if the next colour I choose doesn't look good either?
Ughh! Frustrating thought process.

So what do I do to steer clear of this phobia? I decide to stick to neutrals and bring in the colour with the soft furnishings and accessories. All you brave colour lovers must be going "Scaredy-cat", "Chicken". I know!

But the neutral camp ain't bad at all. It's got its advantages, charm and lovely options. Must add flexibility as a trait.
Take the room below for instance, Neutral, minimalistic, colour added via art work, the carpet, the cushions, accessories.
What's not to love I say!

That said, my heart still tugs me towards the colour loving party! Maybe an accent wall, a niche that stands out with a favourite colour, a ceiling done in a bold hue. I can always change it right?

These pictures below make it tougher for me to decide. Colour or Neutral?

What path did you take? How did you decide? Any advice, learning or sharing of experience is welcome.

    1. That paradox is the crux of the problem! Wondering which side should I lean towards.

  3. My hall is an L shape, Sim. with a few doors and empty slots for woodwork(rented house like yours).
I did the hall a combination of light green and light yellow and you could check out the result in my facebook albums(recent ones - like princess dress up party 2013).
The idea is to have the closest combination from the color pallet and combine it as opposed to an accent wall with contrasting color. Also see the mirrors that are used to pep up one of the empty slots, see the bird cage and my nephew standing next to it picture. (I ll tag).
The effect is neutral and takes any kinda decor well.Me not too much into photography, so this may not speak up well in the pictures, but I am taking this combo with me to my next house as well.

  5. This is so very confusing! And all the options look wonderful! Its essentially how you end up doing the rest of the things apart from the wall colour.

I am totally scared about the new place we have got... have to furnish and do all the colour detailing in another year, and this is going to be a stressful time for sure!

    1. I know! It totally is but sooner or later the right look for your taste and like comes to you on its own. So breathe in, breathe out and let the colour winds blow :)

  6. Simz I know your amazing sense of taste, and coloured wall or not I don't think you can go wrong :) !!! And I have a couple of orange/ochre walls in my living room plus in the last paintjob we also painted one wall in every room in a different colour. Again not very bright/overboard, but I like the chirpiness. Come home and see!

  9. i so agree to that can i adjust to it for long... u named it well, what i have seen thru time is a light pastel color on the walls in bangalore homes, where space is a constraint helps in making it look bigger.. and if its a paint with some self pattern on one wall of the room, it looks even better...

  11. I guess you should go with what best defines you... colors we love are a reflection of us and many a times they translate well into the decor around us.. why not think of it from that perspective.
